There is evidence of Maypole dancing on the village green since 1828. The maypole was renewed in 1871 when hundreds of people were reported to join in the May festivities.
We have photographs and records of celebrations held in the village in May and June 1937 to celebrate King George VI’s Coronation.
A Surrey Advertiser advertisement says that the Annual Village Show was to be held on 19th July 1947. We also have records from 18th July 1953 when it was recorded as ‘ a gala day for the village Coronation funds’.
The Village Show continues to take place annually in July on the village green; comprising of Wood Street Village Horticultural Summer Show, Crowning of the Flower Queen, Maypole Dancing, Stalls, rides, entertainment, food and a dog show.
