British Legion
Formed in 1937 with about 25 members, including founder members ‘Toby’ Page-Smith and William Baigent. They rented the Wheelwright’s shop, next to the Forge.
The Wheelwright was presented to the British Legion as their HQ by Mr Crosby Cooke, who lived in the Forge, next door, then known as Lennox Lodge.

The women’s section was formed in 1939 with founder members Dorothy Andrews, Doris West and Daisy Stovold.
With a membership of over 200, they moved to a new building, built in 1954 on the corner of the Village Green, financed by National Headquarters.

In 1955 the war memorial was dedicated and from monies raised a memorial plinth was bought.
Rev Helen Woodward led the dedication with the last post sounded and poppy wreaths were laid.
Wood Street British Legion was disbanded in 2002, the memorial plinth and flagpole moved to St. Alban’s Church where Remembrance Day is observed on 11th November to recall the end of First World War hostilities. The building was taken over by Christopher Robin Day Nursery, opening in 2003, part of a privately owned group of 5 nurseries.
