Football has been played in various places in the village,

In the 1930’s it was played in Mr Pullen’s field by the pond. He was a farmer living at Hillplace Farm in the 1930’s.

By the 1947/8 season the Wood Street British Legion Football Club were runners up in the Guildford and District Football League.

In the early 1960’s, Dennis Holt, Peter Parry, Jack Thomas, Ted Hunt and Toby Page-Smith began fundraising for a new football pitch.

They collected £100 towards a new ground at Backside Common.

In 1964 the ground was prepared, drains laid and the pitch seeded. Club colours were all white with a blue trim.

Successes included the District & League Cup double won at Backside common by the under 18’s.

Senior Football ceased to be played at Backside Common there in 1982/3, but the boys continued until 1989.

There were no changing rooms or toilet facilities

With the cricket club moving from the village Green to Backside Common in 1991, this allowed football to be played on the village Green.

A junior football team played on the village Green from 1992.

In 1998 an under 12 football team was started, sponsored by Bulimores Accountants and money raised at the village summer show, playing in the Guildford, Shere & District league.

Wood Street hasn’t had a football team since early 2000.
