Elanor Andrews  1911 – 1998

Born in West London, left school at 14 & worked as a milkmaid in the west Country. Served as a Land Girl in the 2^nd World War & moved to Cheyne Walk London working for the Ministry of Agriculture.  Moved to Doritt Crescent and became committed members of St Alban’s with her great friend Betty Moorcroft. First worshipping in the old church. She painted many local houses & scenes, and in the 1970’s, selling them in aid of church funds. A painting St Albans in the snow, was dedicated in the church narthex. Member of the PCC when sufficient funds were raised to build the new church.  (Crossway January 1999)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dorothy & Harold Andrews,

They lived at Durgen, Frog Grove Lane, the bungalow which was built in 1935 by Cull the builder. Dorothy dealt at Woodhams Shop, and later when it was called Grinstead’s. She was in the shop when a doodlebug fell at the top of Frog Grove Lane.

Bill & Gladys Austin.

Bill was a builder, meeting Gladys in the 1930’s while working at Frog Grove House where she was a parlour maid.  They bought a plot of land & Bill built a house in Frog Grove Lane., spending the rest of their lives there.  Bill served in the RAMC regiment during the war. He helped build the new St Alban’s church. A parish councillor & a Gleaner’s supporter.   Bill along with Walter Fisher & Alf Philips made side show for the village show Horticultural Society.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Joan Alsworth nee Cooley

Joan was born in 1921, moved to Wood Street in 1923 with the Frapwells, who owned Frog Grove House.  She lived in an adjacent cottage. Joan went to Wood Street Infants Scheel when Mrs Robinson was her infant teacher with Miss Hogg and Miss Barnes.  Mr Freddie Goddard came as Headmaster & lived in the schoolhouse Joan’s father, henry Percy Cooley served in India 1914-1919. He was the chauffer/gardener to the Frapwells for 22 years. Her mother, Ellen Cooley, was the cook.  Attached photograph shows Harold Percy Cooley & Ellen with their daughter Joan in the front garden of the cottage next to Frog Grove House in c1927.

Rosie Antcliffe:  b 1990

Rosie danced with the Kirov Ballet Company at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Trained at the Arden Holland School of Ballet since she was three and also performed in Petruska for the Queen Mother’s 100^th birthday.  – (Picture – Surrey Advertiser Sept 2000).
